Fifth grade students traveled back in time to experience a day in the Swedish Colony of Bishop Hill in the 1850s. Students participated in period-appropriate tasks, with boys hauling water, splitting and sawing wood to fuel ovens, and cleaning potatoes, while girls prepared food items such as corn mush, cheese, rhubarb cobbler, and hard tack. After completing their work, students enjoyed a family-style meal together. The experience provided a meaningful opportunity for students to engage in living history, and they especially enjoyed earning their Swedish names.

Students in Mrs. Vincent’s second grade class recently completed the Flat Stanley Project, a fun, literacy-based activity inspired by the book Flat Stanley. Students created a paper version of themselves and sent it to different locations, where it went on “adventures” and returned with stories and photos. This project helped students strengthen their writing skills while learning about geography, culture, and the world around them.
